The MEND Program is a cutting-edge, evidence-based healthy lifestyle program for overweight children and their parents. Rather than focusing on weight loss, the program uses a practical, interactive learning approach to teach children and parents weight management skills. This includes inspiring families to adopt a healthier lifestyle and enjoy preparing and eating healthy foods, including reading food labels and shopping for healthy foods on a budget. The sessions also focus on making exercise fun, especially for children who are not fans of traditional school physical education.
The YMCA of Metropolitan Denver works partnership with the MEND organization to run the program. Families take part in fun two-hour sessions twice a week for 10 weeks. The program helps them improve their eating and exercise habits, thereby improving children’s fitness, physical activity levels, nutrition, and self-esteem. The program is funded through the Colorado Health Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.
