Swim Lessons

For more than 150 years the YMCA has been teaching people to swim. We continue that tradition with summer swim lessons at the Village of Five Parks.

 

Preschool Stage 1: Water Acclimation

In Stage 1: Water Acclimation, you will get comfortable with underwater exploration and learn how to safely get out of the water if you fall in. 

Move to Stage 2 when you: are willing to go underwater voluntarily, you can perform a front and back float and you can glide with assistance.

Preschool Stage 2: Water Movement

In Stage 2: Water Movement, lessons will focus on body position and control, directional change and forward movement.

Move to Stage 3 when you can do: a front and back float on your own and front and back glide 5' (preschool) or 10' (school age).

Preschool Stage 3: Water Stamina

In Stage 3: Water Stamina, students will learn to swim longer distances, how to do rhythmic breathing and integrate movements of your arms and legs.

Move to Stage 4 when you can: swim 10 yards (preschool) or 15 yards (school-age) on your front and back; and swim-float-swim 15 yards (preschool) or 25 yards (school-age)

School Age Stage 4: Stroke Introduction

In Stage 4: Stroke Introduction, students develop stroke technique in front and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick.

Move to Stage 5 when you can: swim 15 yards doing the elementary backstroke, back crawl & front crawl with rotary breathing plus swim-float-swim 25 yards and 15 yards of breaststroke and butterfly kicks. 

School Age Stage 5: Stroke Development

In Stage 5: Stoke Development, students will work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes.

Move to stage 6 when you can swim: 50 yards continuously of any stroke, 25 yards of good front crawl, side stroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and 15 yard butterfly.
