Safety Around Water
Have Fun. Be Confident. Stay Safe.
Water is everywhere! It’s at home, at the pool, on our vacations, and in our neighborhoods. Unfortunately, many kids grow up not knowing how to be safe around water. Every day, two children die from drowning and dozens more are hospitalized as a result of near-drowning incidents. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death among children ages 1 to 4.
And, it disproportionately impacts children of color. 60% of African-American and 48% of Hispanic/Latino children are unable to swim, compared to 40% of Caucasian children.
That’s why the YMCA offers the Safety Around Water program.
Different from swim lessons, this program uses games and activities to teach kids 3 to 8 how to be safe wherever there is water. Kids learn about:
- Fundamental water safety skills
- Following pool rules
- Calling 911
- Wearing lifejackets
- Helping friends stay safe
- And what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly
Moreover, kids discover that water can be fun, and not feared, as long as they know what to do. As a leader in aquatics instruction the YMCA is here to help children thrive.
Safety Around Water is open to the entire community and runs the last week of May at four Denver YMCA wellness centers.
